I am a 33-year resident of Kent who cares deeply about the town and am running for First Selectman on the Democratic ticket for election Nov. 7, 2023. I want to have the honor of serving as your first selectman because Kent deserves to have a top leader who governs in a way that is efficient, productive, transparent and respectful. I believe I am that person. I have the background to serve the residents well. While I’ve never been a politician before, I know the issues very well through my work as a journalist over 25 years during the past 3 decades and I can start right out of the gate.
Regionalization and shared services needs to be explored more. Our work with the Northwest Hills Council of Governments (COG) must be nurtured and the first selectman must be an active member of the group. Kent needs to be a leader investigating ways to have towns work together to offer services.
For instance, the small town of Warren has more trips through Park and Recreation than Kent. Could we partner with several towns to be able to share our resources? It would seem to make sense. However, it would need to be fully explored to understand the pros and cons.
Recreation on the Housatonic River is another issue that needs attention and creative solutions to manage. When the town has too many visitors that are attempting to use the river in an unsafe way, the town has to address this. Closing down access is not the path that I would support. With the Wild and Scenic designation of the Housatonic, there is funding coming to the area and the towns on the river need to be communicating and planning the best use of the money. The work that the Housatonic Valley Association has done to be proactive about visitors is to be applauded and supported. However, I would look into ways to fund patrols of the river as a region.
